It Ain't Easy Bein' Green

“The words say ‘It’s not easy being green,’ but the song is about knowing who you are. In it, you hear Jim Henson’s message most clearly. He believed that people are good and want to do their best and no matter how or why we might be different from anybody else, we should learn to love who we are and be proud of it.” ~Ray Charles

The universe is constantly sending us messages. They come in the form of people, song lyrics, challenges, opportunities, artwork, nature, and endless other scenarios. Sometimes there are giant “signs from the universe”, but other times, the signs are more subtle, but no less important-so be ready to receive them. I get up and go out every day with open mindedness and vulnerability, always ready to follow the signs and allow this to happen. This week, Kermit the Frog came into my headspace. He came to me in multiple ways at multiple times, so ignore him I could not!

The song It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green popped into my head....whenever Kermit sings, magic happens, so I listened closely to it and read the lyrics again. It’s such a simple song, but has such profound meaning. It reminded me of what many people are going through right now, whether it be self-identity, career or educational uncertainty, food insecurity, or relationship problems-it’s not easy bein’ _______.

In the first two verses, Kermit The Frog laments about how hard it is to be green and he wonders why when there are so many other colors he could be. In the third and fourth verses, he pivots and looks inside himself, finds self-awareness, and chooses self-love.

Who we are is our greatest tool in learning, growing, connecting with, and inspiring others and this song illustrates that so well!

“Here’s some simple advice-always be yourself.” ~Kermit the Frog

P.S.-Ray Charles’s cover of Kermit’s song as well as his duet with Kermit are extraordinary!
